Classic design

BROUGHT RIGHT UP TO DATE…

Having headed the design team at McLaren during arguably their most successful period ever, I’m a McLaren man through and through. With the Nichols N1A I’ve gone back to the very first McLaren for inspiration, combining lots of classic lines with modern engineering for a car of extraordinary performance and presence.

DESIGN

The new Nichols N1A is a stunning piece of sculpture which brings M1A design language thoroughly up to date. Not a single panel is the same. The N1A has a significantly more aggressive stance from its ground stroking nose to its abrupt and purposeful tail. It is wider, longer and roomier; yet compare the elegant simplicity of the MP4/4 with the visual presence of the Nichols N1A and it’s not hard to see the hand of the same designer at work.

CONSTRUCTION

Underneath the skin the N1A is thoroughly modern featuring a bonded  extruded aluminium and carbon fibre chassis. The pontoons on the side of the cockpit are also load bearing. They are made from carbon fibre sheeting, with a separate bonded infill, also in  carbon fibre to produce a double skin. Suspension features  classic wishbones all round. Power steering and traction control are  available. Wheels and tyres are 19” clad with 245 section rubber on the  front and 20” 305 section on the rear. Sat in the fully reclined driving position, you get an idea of what Senna  and Prost experienced in the MP4/4; the main difference being that it is  possible to experience the N1A on the open road.

AERODYNAMICS

Hours were spent in the MIRA wind tunnel, the aim being to carry over the visual aspects  of the N1A while optimising the aerodynamics. The N1A demonstrated negligible inherent lift and with development, front and rear downforce was achieved without compromising the aesthetics.

PERFORMANCE

In a modern World of over-saturated computerisation, the N1A offers the chance to experience raw power-to-weight ratio. Coming in at 900kg with over 600bhp and masses of torque, the performance is visceral.

This is a sound track to stir the soul.

Power is from a 7 litre V8 engine hand-assembled by renowned specialists Langford Performance Engineering.

PERSONALISATION

Everything from the careful lay up of carbon fiber to the interior of the N1a is meticulously hand crafted. Given our customers’ ability to influence the creative process during the specification of their car, every car eventually becomes a unique work of art built to the highest standards and to our customers wishes.

The ability to personalise a Nichols is limited only by the imagination. Any colour is possible,  any material and finish: even the opportunity to create bespoke custom-designed liveries.

To celebrate the arrival of the N1A, the first 15 cars will be numbered and badged to celebrate each individual victory of the Steve Nichols-designed McLaren MP4/4 in the hands of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. Hold tight for more images of these captivating cars, destined to become cherished collectibles.
